A legal expert has criticized a Victorian private security company's plan to arm its guards with firearms while patrolling neighborhoods in Melbourne's west. YPG Risk is training its security guards to obtain firearm licenses for night patrols in Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes, citing concerns about local crime.
Emeritus Professor of Law and Criminal Justice at the University of South Australia, Rick Sarre, warned that arming security guards could lead to serious harm. Speaking on 774 ABC Radio Melbourne Drive, Sarre said Victorians should 'be careful what you wish for' and that the move will result in someone getting 'very very hurt'.
The proposal comes amid broader discussions about security measures, including the introduction of body-worn cameras at Westfield shopping centres. However, Sarre's comments highlight potential risks of escalating security responses in residential areas.
