Preventing fatal falls in older people: targeted support needed
Preventing fatal falls in older people: targeted support needed

Falls are a serious but often overlooked health crisis, according to experts who emphasize that they are preventable and should not be considered an inevitable part of aging. In a recent letter responding to an article by Denis Campbell, Jules Robinson of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) highlighted that falls are the leading cause of accidental death in the UK, claiming over 11,000 lives each year. More than 9,000 of these deaths occur among individuals aged 75 and older. The crisis is worsening, with a 12% increase in the rate of deaths over a single year.

Multifactorial assessments are key

Robinson stressed that the causes of falls are varied and complex, requiring interventions that consider a person's living environment, support networks, and physical and mental health. Such detailed multifactorial assessments demand specialist expertise and more time than is typically available during a short GP appointment. RoSPA is calling for equitable access to falls and fracture liaison services, eliminating the postcode lottery in treatment availability. Without targeted support, fatal falls will likely continue to rise, resulting in tragic and preventable deaths.

Investment in physiotherapy can save lives and money

Sara Hazzard, co-chair of the Community Rehab Alliance, added that comprehensive access to physiotherapy could prevent nearly 200,000 falls annually and save the NHS over £275 million each year. However, rehabilitation services are hampered by workforce shortages, recruitment freezes, and a loss of clinical space and resources. Hazzard urged the government to invest in rehabilitation and the physiotherapy workforce if it is serious about preventing falls and reducing pressure on the NHS. Prevention saves money, but only if services have the capacity to deliver it.
