Wollongong Man Jailed for Bus Driver Assault

A Wollongong man has been sentenced to jail for assaulting a bus driver in Brisbane, in a case that highlighted the vulnerability of public transport workers. Echibaketa Byamungu, 21, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm against driver Chun-hung Chiang.

The incident occurred in June when Byamungu boarded a bus at South Bank station. Driver Chiang, 46, asked him to leave due to previous interactions, and when Byamungu refused, Chiang attempted to physically remove him. Byamungu then struck Chiang multiple times in the head and face, as captured on video by a passenger.

In court, prosecutor Jack Scott noted the aggravating factor that Chiang was performing a public service. Deputy Chief Magistrate Anthony Gett described the attack as 'deplorable and grotesque' and stated that bus drivers are not employed as security guards. Byamungu's lawyer cited his difficult upbringing in a Tanzanian refugee camp and limited criminal history.
