Perth Mum Unfit for Trial Over Son's Dreamworld Payout

A Perth woman accused of stealing part of her son's compensation from the 2016 Dreamworld ride disaster has appeared in court, where her lawyer indicated she would plead not guilty.

Michelle Lisa Hanson, 45, faced Fremantle Magistrates Court on a single count of stealing, but was not required to enter a plea. Her lawyer told the court she would contest the charge.

The case relates to a personal injury claim lodged by her son after the Thunder River Rapids ride tragedy on October 25, 2016, which killed four people. The boy, then 16, was on holiday with his family and sustained an injury at the ride, though he was not in one of the rafts that flipped.

Police allege Ms Hanson acted on her son's behalf in the compensation claim but later stole some of the payout. The financial crimes squad investigated and laid the charge.

The court did not set a trial date, and Ms Hanson was granted bail to appear at a later hearing.
