A 23-year-old inmate has died after being stabbed at Wellington Correctional Centre in western New South Wales. The incident occurred at the mixed-security facility on Goolma Road at approximately 3:30pm yesterday.
Police allege a 26-year-old fellow inmate stabbed the victim. The 23-year-old was taken to Orange Hospital in a critical condition but died this morning.
The 26-year-old has been charged with murder and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He has been refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Dubbo Local Court in July.
A crime scene has been established, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. NSW Corrective Services expressed condolences to the victim's family and acknowledged any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by the death.
A Corrective Services spokesperson stated that any death in custody is immediately reported to the NSW Coroner and subject to a rigorous public inquiry. Both Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident.
