Probationary Officer Stabbed with Sword During Sydney Callout

A 28-year-old probationary police officer was stabbed with a 50cm-long sword during a callout in Sydney's southwest on Friday evening. The officer, who had been on the job for only three months, was attacked at a home on Werombi Rd in Grasmere around 5.20pm.

Police were responding to reports of a breach of an apprehended violence order and conducting a welfare check. The officer was accompanied by another probationary officer and two senior constables. Upon arrival, a confrontation broke out with a 20-year-old man at the home.

Superintendent Paul Condon said officers used tactical options including taser and OC spray, but none were successful. The man allegedly launched a spear at the officers before charging at them with a sword and stabbing the probationary officer in the leg.

The injured officer was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital with a 20cm gash to his upper right thigh and is in a serious but stable condition. The other officers applied tourniquets to stem the bleeding, which Condon said likely prevented a tragic outcome.

The 20-year-old man, known to police and previously armed, was charged with 11 offences including two counts of attempted murder and four counts of wounding with intent to resist arrest. He was refused bail and is to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
