British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has dismissed suggestions that he was snubbed by former US President Donald Trump during the recent G7 summit, branding such claims as 'nonsense'. Speaking to reporters after the summit, Starmer emphasised that his interactions with Trump were positive and constructive.
Starmer Responds to Snub Claims
Reports had emerged that Trump had ignored Starmer at a leaders' reception, sparking speculation of a rift between the two leaders. However, Starmer was quick to refute these allegations, stating that he and Trump had held 'productive discussions' on a range of issues including trade, security, and climate change.
'I had a very good meeting with President Trump,' Starmer said. 'We covered a lot of ground, and I found him to be engaged and interested in what we had to say. There was no snub whatsoever.'
Positive Tone at Summit
The Prime Minister described the overall tone of the G7 summit as 'positive' and 'collaborative', despite the presence of several leaders who have had strained relations with Trump in the past. Starmer noted that the summit provided an opportunity to strengthen ties with key allies and address global challenges.
'The G7 is always a valuable forum for dialogue,' he added. 'We discussed important issues like the war in Ukraine, economic stability, and the need for coordinated action on climate change. I believe we made real progress.'
Focus on UK-US Relations
Starmer stressed the importance of the UK-US relationship, describing it as 'the bedrock of international security'. He expressed confidence that the two countries would continue to work closely together, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming US presidential election.
'The special relationship between the UK and the US is enduring,' Starmer said. 'It transcends individual leaders and administrations. I am committed to maintaining and strengthening that bond.'
When pressed on whether he had been deliberately sidelined by Trump during the summit, Starmer laughed off the suggestion. 'I think some people in the media are looking for stories that aren't there,' he said. 'We had a full schedule of meetings, and I was fully engaged with all of my counterparts. There was no snub.'
Reactions from Other Leaders
Other leaders at the summit also downplayed reports of tensions with Trump. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has had a rocky relationship with Trump in the past, described their interactions as 'professional' and 'focused on results'. French President Emmanuel Macron echoed similar sentiments, noting that the summit had been 'constructive'.
The G7 summit, held in Cornwall, England, brought together leaders from the UK, US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, along with representatives from the European Union. Discussions centered on global economic recovery, vaccine distribution, and climate action.
