Probationary Officer Stabbed With Sword In Sydney Confrontation

A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a police officer was stabbed with a sword in Sydney's south-west. The incident occurred on Friday evening in Grasmere, where officers responded to a concern for welfare and a breached Apprehended Violence Order.

Police from Camden Police Area Command attended a home on Werombi Road around 5:20pm. Upon arrival, they attempted to arrest Andrea Surache, who allegedly threw a spear at officers before stabbing a 23-year-old probationary constable in the leg with a sword.

The injured officer was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and then taken to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition. He is awaiting surgery for a 20-centimetre laceration, with two tourniquets used to stem the bleeding.

Superintendent Paul Condon commended the bravery of his officers, noting that the situation escalated quickly and could have had a tragic outcome. He described body-worn footage of the incident as 'extremely confronting'. Officers seized multiple weapons at the scene, including a spear, hatchet, and a 50-centimetre sword.

Andrea Surache has been charged with 11 offences, including two counts of attempted murder. He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
