Passenger Dies After Car Plunges Into NSW Weir

A 20-year-old man has died after the car he was a passenger in crashed into a weir in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney. The incident occurred at Audley Weir around 1:15am on Wednesday.

Police divers recovered the man's body from the submerged vehicle, which was pulled from the water about 10:20am. The passenger has not yet been formally identified.

The driver, also 20, managed to escape the sinking blue Audi and reached safety. Police allege the Audi crashed into a silver Mercedes driven by an 18-year-old man before entering the water.

Both drivers are in custody and being interviewed at Sutherland Police Station. A passenger from the Mercedes is voluntarily assisting police with information.

Police are investigating whether the two cars were racing. Roadside blood alcohol tests were negative, and both drivers were taken to hospital for mandatory blood testing.

Acting Inspector Steven Planinic described the circumstances as tragic and noted difficult conditions for rescue crews. Investigations, including a mechanical examination of the Audi, are ongoing.
