NSW Premier Chris Minns has announced an additional public holiday for Anzac Day in 2026 and 2027, when the day falls on a weekend. The move will give NSW residents a day off on the Monday after Anzac Day, April 25, which in those years will be a Saturday.
Currently, only Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory observe a public holiday on the Monday following Anzac Day when it falls on a weekend. Minns said the trial aims to boost participation in remembrance services and provide extra time for reflection.
The premier acknowledged that not all business groups support the change, noting it may be an additional burden for small businesses. However, he stated it is an important step for the state. The trial will run for two years and be reviewed in 2032, when Anzac Day next falls on a weekend.
Anzac Day services will not be impacted, and two-up will remain illegal except on April 25 and Remembrance Day, November 11. Acting President of RSL NSW, Vince Williams, said the extra holiday does not undermine the service and sacrifice of Anzacs, but may allow more time for local gatherings.
NSW currently has the fewest public holidays in Australia, with 11, compared to up to 15 in other states and territories.
