A 23-year-old man has sustained significant injuries after a violent struggle with police officers during an arrest in Toukley on the Central Coast. NSW Police have launched a critical incident investigation into the incident, which began when officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a home on Hargraves Street.
Police allege the man refused to enter the police vehicle, managed to remove a first set of handcuffs, and assaulted officers at the scene. He was eventually placed in the vehicle and taken to Wyong Police Station, where he allegedly broke out of a second pair of handcuffs and again assaulted officers before being subdued with OC spray.
At the station, the man continued to assault officers, and paramedics were called to assist. He was taken to Wyong Hospital under police guard, where he attempted to bite an officer before receiving treatment for several injuries. His condition later deteriorated, and he was transferred to Gosford Hospital with significant injuries.
The critical incident investigation will be conducted by a team from the Newcastle City Police District. Separately, another critical incident probe is underway after a 43-year-old man died when his car crashed into a truck during a police pursuit in Narrandera in the state's southwest.
Police are urging anyone with information about the Toukley incident, which occurred at 7:20 am on Monday, June 8, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
