Newcastle Man Avoids Jail for Possessing 34,000 Child Abuse Images

A Newcastle man has avoided a prison sentence after pleading guilty to possessing more than 34,000 child abuse images and bestiality videos. Jarrod Scifleet, 25, was sentenced to a three-year community corrections order in the Newcastle District Court on Friday.

Police raided Scifleet's home in suburban Newcastle in October 2024 after the Australian Federal Police detected his offending. Investigators seized his phone and tablet, which contained the illicit material. Scifleet pleaded guilty in September last year to four offences, including possessing child abuse material, bestiality material, and unregistered firearms.

Judge Roy Ellis described some of the images as “depraved” but accepted that Scifleet was unlikely to reoffend with ongoing counselling. The judge noted Scifleet's mental health issues and reclusive lifestyle, stating he was “easily led” and had been collecting abuse images for a decade.

Scifleet's community corrections order includes strict conditions, such as a ban on owning internet-capable devices. Any internet access on another person's device must be supervised by a family member. He must also continue counselling and comply with an extensive treatment plan. Additionally, Scifleet will be on the Child Protection Register for eight years.
