Darwin Man Jailed for Public Masturbation

A 40-year-old Darwin man has been sentenced to one month in jail after pleading guilty to public masturbation. The incident occurred on the morning of April 22, when the man was seen masturbating in front of an office block on Woods Street in the Darwin CBD.

He was arrested several hours later and taken into custody, but refused to explain his actions. The case was heard in the Darwin Magistrates Court, where the man pleaded guilty to behaving in an indecent manner in a public place.

Magistrate Dick Wallace noted that the defendant had previously served time in prison for a similar offence, indicating he had not learned that such behaviour is unacceptable. Wallace stated, 'It's the sort of thing that makes the public very worried ... it's offensive and it's worrying.'
