A 31-year-old Canberra man has been remanded in custody following a brief hearing in the ACT Magistrates Court today, facing 19 charges related to the alleged assault of his partner over a two-month period.
Police allege the man forced the woman to take illicit drugs, choked her until she was unconscious, sexually assaulted her, and filmed some of the incidents. He is also accused of threatening to kill her multiple times and taking her money, clothing, and other belongings.
According to police, the pair met at the start of August when the woman was homeless, and the man allegedly used her situation to continue the assaults. The woman first reported the matter earlier this month, but it took officers three weeks to locate the man.
Police found him on Saturday night after a neighbour of the man's former partner reported noises coming from their backyard and roof. Officers discovered the man hiding in the neighbour's roof cavity, and he surrendered without incident.
The case is expected to return to court next month in the Family Violence list.
