A 17-year-old girl charged with the murder of her 10-year-old sister in Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, has not entered a plea two years after the incident. The teenager remains in custody after her case was briefly mentioned in the Broadmeadow Children's Court in Newcastle.
Emergency services were called to a home just before 4pm on Monday, where they found the younger girl with multiple stab wounds. Despite treatment by paramedics, she died at the scene. The teenager was arrested and later charged with domestic violence-related murder.
No bail application was made, and the matter has been adjourned until June. Lake Macquarie Police District Commander Tracy Chapman confirmed the girls were sisters living in the same household, with no prior police involvement for such matters.
Homicide squad commander Detective Superintendent Daniel Doherty stated police will allege the teenager was solely responsible for the death. He noted the family is grieving and homicide victims support groups have been notified.
A local resident described the incident as a horrific shock for the quiet community, saying they heard nothing until sirens arrived. NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley called the events absolutely horrific and confirmed an active investigation.
