Georgie Purcell Faces Antisemitic Abuse Over Jewish Partner

Victorian MP Georgie Purcell has disclosed that she and her Jewish partner have been subjected to a relentless barrage of antisemitic and misogynistic abuse, leading her to refer the matter to the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC).

Abuse Escalates Following Public Relationship Announcement

Purcell, a prominent Animal Justice Party MP, revealed that the abuse intensified after she publicly acknowledged her relationship with her partner, who is Jewish. The harassment has included vile antisemitic slurs, threats, and misogynistic attacks targeting both her and her partner.

“The abuse has been constant and deeply disturbing. It’s not just about me; it’s about targeting my partner because of his faith, and it’s rooted in hatred,” Purcell said in a statement.

Referral to IBAC

Purcell has formally referred the matter to IBAC, citing concerns that some of the abuse may involve public officials or individuals in positions of power. She emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to address the hateful conduct and ensure accountability.

“I have a duty to report this, not just for myself and my partner, but for all Victorians who face similar hatred. No one should be targeted because of who they love or their religion,” she added.

Wider Context of Rising Antisemitism

The abuse comes amid a broader rise in antisemitic incidents across Australia. According to the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, antisemitic incidents increased by 26% in 2023, with a further spike in 2024. Purcell’s case highlights the intersection of antisemitism and misogyny, which experts say often targets women in public life.

Dr. Rebecca Forgasz, a historian specializing in antisemitism, noted that “women in politics are particularly vulnerable to gendered antisemitic abuse, which combines stereotypes about Jews with misogynistic tropes.”

Political Reactions

Purcell has received widespread support from across the political spectrum. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan condemned the abuse, stating, “There is no place for antisemitism or misogyny in our society. Georgie and her partner deserve to feel safe.”

Opposition Leader John Pesutto also expressed solidarity, calling for a swift investigation. “This behavior is abhorrent and must be met with the full force of the law,” he said.

Call for Action

Purcell is urging authorities to take stronger action against online hate speech and to protect victims of targeted abuse. She plans to advocate for legislative changes to address the gaps in current laws that fail to adequately penalize antisemitic and misogynistic harassment.

“We need systemic change. This isn’t just about one person; it’s about dismantling the culture of hate that allows this to happen,” she concluded.
