Canberra Man Denied Bail Over Car Ramming and Shooting Incident

A 20-year-old man from Spence has been refused bail by the ACT Magistrates Court after being accused of ramming and shooting at another car in Canberra's north. The man appeared in court charged with discharging a firearm at a vehicle and furious driving following the incident on May 25.

Police allege the man was driving a Ford Focus on Ginninderra Drive in Florey when he encountered people he knew in a Holden Cruze. It is claimed he rammed the Holden multiple times before firing a gun at the car. The Holden was later found in a gutter near the intersection of Ginninderra Drive and Kerrigan Street after the occupants contacted authorities.

The man was arrested early the next morning after police stopped an Audi on the Federal Highway. Officers allegedly located a Ford key believed to belong to the vehicle involved in the incident. The Ford Focus was later found at an address in Ngunnawal with damage consistent with the alleged ramming.

During the bail application, the man's Legal Aid lawyer argued for his release, citing special circumstances. She stated he was the sole owner and operator of a barber shop and provided financial support to his parents, with no one else available to run the business if he remained in custody.

Magistrate James Stewart rejected the application without hearing from the prosecution, stating the man's circumstances did not meet the threshold for special or exceptional circumstances. The man was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court in June.
