The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has publicly backed Labour leader Keir Starmer amid growing internal party tensions and the electoral threat posed by Nigel Farage and his Reform UK party.
Burnham's Endorsement
In a statement released on Thursday, Burnham said: "Keir Starmer is the right person to lead the Labour Party and the country. He has my full support." The endorsement comes as Starmer faces criticism from some Labour MPs over his handling of policy direction and the party's response to Farage's resurgence.
Reform UK's Rising Threat
Recent opinion polls show Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, gaining significant ground, with some surveys placing them ahead of the Liberal Democrats. According to a YouGov poll published this week, Reform UK now commands 15% of the vote share, up 5 points since the start of the year. This has alarmed Labour strategists, who fear a split on the right could hand seats to the Conservatives in key battlegrounds.
Internal Labour Divisions
Burnham's intervention is seen as an attempt to quell internal dissent. A group of backbench MPs has been calling for a more radical economic agenda, while others urge moderation to win back voters lost to Reform. Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves has attempted to strike a balance, promising fiscal responsibility while investing in public services.
Impact on General Election Prospects
Political analysts warn that Labour cannot afford infighting if it hopes to win the next general election. Professor Jane Green of the University of Manchester said: "The rise of Reform UK is a clear danger to Labour's electoral coalition. Starmer needs to unite his party and present a clear alternative to the Conservatives." Labour currently holds a 10-point lead in the polls, but the margin has narrowed in recent months.
