A 24-year-old man is fighting for life after being attacked with a machete and then struck by a car outside a popular nightspot in Albany early Sunday morning.
Police said the incident occurred on Stirling Terrace just after 1:00am, when two men became involved in a physical altercation. One of the men produced a machete and struck the victim to the side of his head, causing a deep laceration.
The victim was then hit by a vehicle driven by a third person, sustaining life-threatening injuries. He was flown to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle has been apprehended, but police are still searching for the machete attacker. A forensic team arrived at the scene around 11:00am.
Assistant Police Commissioner Allan Adams linked the attack to alcohol-related violence, stating that changing drinking attitudes is key to preventing such incidents.
