One Nation Support Wanes Amid Policy Rejection

Support for Pauline Hanson's One Nation party has dropped, with a new Guardian Essential poll showing a majority of Australian voters reject key party policies. The poll, conducted from June 24-28, surveyed 1,123 voters and found that 62% oppose a ban on Muslim immigration, 57% reject halting all immigration, and 54% are against withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement.

Policy Details and Voter Sentiment

One Nation's platform includes controversial measures such as banning Muslims from entering Australia, a temporary halt to all immigration, and exiting the Paris Agreement. According to the poll, only 23% of voters support the Muslim ban, 25% back an immigration halt, and 22% favor leaving the climate pact. The party's primary vote has slipped to 3%, down from 5% in March.

“These results show that One Nation's hardline policies are out of step with mainstream Australian opinion,” said a spokesperson for the Essential Research team. “Voters are increasingly concerned about climate change and social cohesion, not division.”

Impact on Political Landscape

The decline in One Nation's support could shift dynamics in the Senate, where the party currently holds two seats. Analysts suggest that the drop may benefit the Coalition and Labor, as voters who previously leaned towards One Nation may return to major parties. The poll also indicates that 68% of voters believe climate change is a serious threat, and 71% support Australia's immigration program as beneficial to the economy.

Regional and Demographic Breakdown

Support for One Nation remains strongest in Queensland, where the party originated, but even there it has fallen to 5%. Among voters aged 18-34, only 2% back One Nation, while those over 55 show 4% support. The poll has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
