The US military is planning a permanent war-ready weapons stockpile for its Marine Corps in Victoria, positioned beyond the reach of most Chinese missiles, according to tender documents reported by Agence France-Presse.
Strategic Positioning in the South Pacific
This development marks the first such stockpile for the Marine Corps in Australia. Analysts say the United States is keen to leverage Australia’s strategic location in the South Pacific to counter China’s rapid military buildup.
Historical Context
During the Cold War, the US Marine Corps began global prepositioning of military supplies, using floating stores on ships and caves in Norway to store weapons, ammunition, and vehicles capable of sustaining thousands of troops.
The first land stockpile in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to open this year in the Philippines, close to potential flashpoints in the South China Sea.
Advanced Planning for Australian Stockpile
Documents published by the US Navy this month show advanced planning for an even larger Australian stockpile. The US has allocated $30 million to build warehouses and offices in Victoria for “critical forward provisioning.”
