Patients can now obtain Wegovy from major pharmacy chains such as Boots and LloydsPharmacy, as well as online platforms. The medication is intended for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 and at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.
According to the manufacturer Novo Nordisk, the drug works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation, leading to reduced hunger and calorie intake. Clinical trials have shown that patients using Wegovy can achieve an average weight loss of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks.
