Southside Kids Mental Health Clinic Opens in Canberra

New Southside Clinic to Address Growing Demand

A new mental health clinic for children and adolescents is set to open in Canberra's southside, aiming to meet the rising demand for youth mental health services in the region. The facility, located in Tuggeranong, will provide specialist care for young people aged up to 18 years, offering both individual and family therapy.

Civic Clinic's Success Provides Model

The initiative follows the success of the existing Civic clinic, which has supported more than 2,500 young people since its opening in 2020. According to ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith, the Civic clinic has been instrumental in reducing wait times for youth mental health services. "The Civic clinic has shown us that early intervention and accessible care can make a significant difference in the lives of young people and their families," she said.

Funding and Services

The southside clinic is funded through a $4.2 million investment from the ACT government, part of a broader $50 million mental health package. The clinic will employ a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists, and is expected to support up to 500 young people annually. Services will include assessment, therapy, and group programs, with a focus on anxiety, depression, and behavioral issues.

Community Response

Local community groups have welcomed the new clinic, noting that access to mental health services has been a long-standing issue for families in the Tuggeranong area. "This clinic is a lifeline for many families who have struggled to get timely support for their children," said Sarah Johnson, a spokesperson for the Tuggeranong Community Council. The clinic is scheduled to open in early 2025, with referrals accepted from general practitioners and schools.
