A 32-year-old man has lost his licence for six months after speeding at 166 kilometres per hour while police attempted to stop him on the Newcastle Inner City Bypass at Gateshead.
Highway patrol officers from Lake Macquarie, operating under Operation Shore Safe, were conducting speed enforcement duties just after 10am on Thursday when they detected the black Lexus travelling at 142kmh in a 90kmh zone.
Police pursued the driver, who accelerated to 166kmh before eventually pulling over. He was issued a $3,054 fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45kmh and received an immediate six-month licence suspension.
The incident occurred a week after the launch of Operation Shore Safe, a joint initiative between highway patrol and northern region police aimed at improving road and pedestrian safety across coastal communities from the Central Coast to Port Stephens.
The operation, running throughout the summer period, involves motorcycle officers, trail bikes, bicycle patrols, and unmarked vehicles, with key focuses on e-micromobility device safety and reducing fatal and serious injury collisions.
