Renovated Mid-Century Kiama Home Sells After Price Reduction

An extensively renovated mid-century home in Kiama, complete with bespoke furniture, has found a buyer after its asking price was reduced. The property at 53 Thomson Street was initially listed for sale via a timed online auction, but despite six registered bidders, it did not sell through that method.

The home had a price guide of about $2.1 million, which was later reduced to between $1.85 million and $1.98 million. Selling agent Andy Wharton from First National Coast & Country confirmed the home has now sold to a local buyer who loves the property and is relocating from a large unit. The sale price remains undisclosed but is within the latest guide range.

Mr Wharton said the new owners were attracted to the mid-century style and the fact that no maintenance or renovation was required. He noted that altering the price generated more interest, leading to the sale. The home, described as a bespoke two-bedroom property, does not suit everyone's needs but attracted an amazing amount of interest.

Owners Chris Shaw and Ian Treloggen purchased the home in 2015, when it was a boxy blonde-brick house with royal blue trim, florid carpet, and a purple bathroom. They enlisted Wollongong-based architect Geoff Borst for an 18-month renovation that won the prestigious Trends International Design Award 2019 for Architect Renovation of the Year. The project converted the three-bedroom home into a two-bedder to create extra space.

The home sits on an elevated 845.6 square metre block offering easterly harbour views and uninterrupted ocean vistas. Retro features include a chrome starburst around the front door handle salvaged from a demolished mid-century house in Palm Springs, USA, a kitsch fish bathroom shower screen, a zig-zag white handrail, and blue-and-white mosaic tiles on the terrace. The property was sold fully furnished, with some pieces dating back to 1955 and fully restored.
