A 74-year-old woman is fighting for her life in hospital after the car she was driving struck a couch on a road near Geelong. Vicki McKenzie, from North Geelong, was driving a blue Kia Rio east along Creamery Road in Bell Post Hill at about 7:50pm on Saturday when she hit the couch.
After hitting the couch, the car left the road and collided with a Hyundai i40 travelling in the opposite direction. Ms McKenzie remains in The Alfred Hospital in a critical but stable condition. A woman and her two children in the other vehicle were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Ms McKenzie's son said his mother had not been expected to survive the trip to the hospital. 'We still don't know what the outcome will be – it could go either way,' he said. He added that she was heading home after dropping her granddaughter off when the crash occurred.
Police are investigating how the couch came to be on the road. Detective Senior Constable Paul Stokes said the couch was believed to have been on the road shortly before the crash. 'Whether it has fallen off the back of a truck or appeared there otherwise, a couch in the middle of a road is extremely dangerous,' he said. 'This poor woman has ended up in hospital in a critical condition through no fault of her own.'
Police have urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential report online.
