A 12-year-old girl has died after being pulled unresponsive from the water at Trigg Beach on Tuesday evening. Police said she and another girl were caught in a rip and pulled out to sea.
Emergency services received reports of swimmers in distress around 6:30pm. The second girl was rescued by a surfer and brought safely to shore. The deceased girl was found unresponsive and brought to shore, where police, volunteer lifeguards, and two off-duty doctors performed CPR.
Five St John WA ambulances attended the scene. The girl was taken to Perth Children's Hospital in critical condition but later died. Surf Life Saving WA urged beachgoers to stay vigilant and swim only at patrolled beaches between the flags, especially during the festive season and heatwave.
Locals noted that an area near the reef at Trigg Point, known as the 'Blue Hole,' can be dangerous. Retired surf life saver Wes Newton described a dangerous current there. Surf Life Saving WA reported 900 rescues in 2024-2025 and 27 drownings at non-patrolled beaches, a 35% increase from the previous year.
