Mother Forgives Driver After Son's Scooter Death in Mandurah

The mother of an 11-year-old boy who died after his scooter collided with a car in Mandurah has publicly forgiven the driver. The crash occurred on Mandurah Terrace near Stewart Street at about 5:10 pm on Easter Monday.

Police said the boy was riding a push scooter, not an electric scooter as initially reported, when he collided with a Mazda sedan driven by a 46-year-old man. The boy sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Peel Health Campus, where he later died.

Witness Tyler Hutchins said the boy rode down a small hill from a driveway onto the road, and a hidden wall blocked his view of oncoming traffic. “He ramped straight into the Mazda and the driver didn't have time to brake,” Mr. Hutchins said. He described the driver as an “absolute mess” after the crash.

Nicole Jones, a nurse who stopped to help, performed CPR on the boy for about 10 minutes. “He obviously wasn't breathing, didn't have a pulse,” she said. “I don't think I'll forget their cries for a good while now.”

The boy's death was the fourth on Western Australian roads over the Easter period. Three others died in separate crashes since Thursday, including a 35-year-old man in Como and a 14-year-old boy in Bedfordale. An 18-year-old woman also died in an off-road accident in Derby.

The Major Crash unit is investigating and has appealed for dash cam or mobile phone footage. The driver is assisting police with their inquiries.
