A National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) firefighter has died while battling a bushfire in the New South Wales Hunter Valley.
The incident occurred during a mopping-up operation at Ellalong, where a large bushfire has been burning for several days.
The firefighter, identified as John Garland, was struck by a falling tree. Despite efforts by colleagues to revive him, he could not be saved.
NPWS head Sally Barnes confirmed that Mr Garland had served as a firefighter for 11 years.
