An elderly woman sustained minor burns to her hands following a kitchen fire at her home in Unanderra on Monday morning. Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) responded to the incident at a Cullen Street property around 8am.
Multiple fire trucks were initially dispatched to the scene, but resources were later scaled back to one truck from Dapto station after occupants managed to extinguish the blaze themselves. Paramedics treated a woman in her 90s for minor burns, and she did not require hospitalisation.
FRNSW Inspector Andrew Barber confirmed the fire was contained quickly, with no visible signs of the blaze from outside the home. The incident has prompted renewed calls for fire safety awareness in the Illawarra region.
In response to a concerning number of house fires, FRNSW has partnered with the Illawarra Mercury to offer free smoke alarms, including installation, and fire safety advice to residents. The initiative aims to prevent further incidents and ensure community safety.
