BHP Funds $10M Pilbara Habitat at Perth Zoo

Perth Zoo is set to receive a $10 million contribution from mining giant BHP for a new immersive habitat learning space inspired by the Pilbara region. The Cook Government announced the project on Tuesday, with a target opening date of 2028.

The new feature will connect the zoo's Australian Bushwalk and native species program, showcasing native fauna and flora from the Pilbara. Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn highlighted species such as the perentie, a large lizard that can grow up to three metres long, and unique kangaroo species.

Swinbourn joked that the animals were friendlier than his usual Tuesday morning meetings, after posing with a western grey kangaroo named Nolga. He predicted a tourism boom, noting that visitors to Perth want to see Australian animals rather than elephants and tigers.

BHP Iron Ore President Tim Day said the habitat aims to excite young people and connect them to the Pilbara region, which powers the nation. The funding comes from BHP's $250 million Resources Community Investment Initiative, part of the $750 million RCII fund announced by former Premier Mark McGowan in 2022.

The RCII fund is also supporting the $150 million Perth Concert Hall redevelopment and the proposed Aboriginal Cultural Centre, which has been delayed by a year and could cost $400 million. Swinbourn expressed confidence in the project, noting that former treasurer Ben Wyatt and Kimberley MP Divina D'Anna are co-chairing the project team to ensure timely development and broaden revenue streams.
