Gareth Damian Martin, the acclaimed creator of Citizen Sleeper, has unveiled his latest project: Signet City. The game, set in a sprawling, decaying metropolis, promises to blend narrative depth with environmental storytelling. Martin describes the game as "a meditation on what it means to live in a city that is both falling apart and full of life."

A City of Contrasts

Signet City is a fictional urban landscape where towering skyscrapers stand alongside crumbling tenements. Players navigate this world as a character seeking to uncover the city's secrets while grappling with its social and economic divides. According to Martin, the game draws inspiration from real-world cities like Detroit and Naples, exploring themes of neglect and community resilience.

"I wanted to create a space that feels alive, where every corner tells a story," Martin said in a recent interview. "The city itself is a character, with its own history and struggles."

Gameplay and Mechanics

Unlike Citizen Sleeper, which focused on survival in a space station, Signet City emphasizes exploration and interaction. Players can engage with various factions, from grassroots activists to corrupt officials, shaping the narrative through their choices. The game features a dynamic day-night cycle and weather system that affects both gameplay and atmosphere.

"We wanted the city to feel responsive," Martin explained. "The rain might flood certain areas, or a protest might block a street. These events are not just set dressing; they change how you approach problems."

Visual and Audio Design

The game's art style blends hand-drawn textures with 3D environments, creating a unique aesthetic that mirrors the city's mix of beauty and decay. The soundtrack, composed by Amos Roddy, uses ambient and electronic elements to evoke the mood of each district.

"Music is crucial for setting the tone," Martin said. "Amos has created a score that feels like the city's heartbeat."

Release and Platforms

Signet City is scheduled for release in early 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch version is also planned. Martin noted that the game will launch with full localization in English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese.

"We're aiming for a simultaneous global release," he added. "The themes of urban decay and hope are universal, and we want as many players as possible to experience them."

Early Reception

Previewers have praised the game's atmospheric world-building and emotional depth. "Signet City feels like a love letter to cities that have seen better days," wrote one critic. "It's both melancholic and hopeful, a rare combination in games."
