Trafalgar Entertainment, the global theatre and entertainment company, has acquired the Bridge Theatre in London, founded by acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner and producer Nick Starr. The deal, announced on Tuesday, adds a major venue to Trafalgar's growing portfolio of London theatres, which includes the Trafalgar Theatre and the Duke of York's Theatre.
Details of the Acquisition
The acquisition includes the Bridge Theatre's freehold and its production arm, Bridge Theatre Productions. Financial terms were not disclosed, but sources close to the deal estimate the value at around £30 million. The theatre, which opened in 2017, has been a success under Hytner and Starr, producing hits like A View from the Bridge and Julius Caesar.
Statements from Key Figures
Nicholas Hytner said: "We are proud of what we have achieved at the Bridge Theatre, and we are confident that Trafalgar Entertainment will build on that success. This is a natural next step for the theatre." Trafalgar Entertainment CEO Rosemary Squire added: "The Bridge Theatre is a world-class venue, and we are thrilled to welcome it to our family. We look forward to working with Nick and his team to continue producing exceptional theatre."
Impact on London Theatre Scene
The acquisition strengthens Trafalgar Entertainment's position in London's West End, where it now operates three theatres. Industry analysts say the move reflects a trend of consolidation in the theatre sector, as larger groups acquire independent venues to expand their reach. The Bridge Theatre will continue its programming under the new ownership, with upcoming productions including a revival of Macbeth and a new play by Lucy Prebble.
