Audiences in Newcastle are preparing to kick off their Sunday shoes as the national tour of Footloose: The Musical arrives at the Civic Theatre. The production, which features huge dance numbers, a beloved soundtrack, and throwback costumes, runs from May 14 to May 24.
The musical follows the same plot as the 1984 film, centering on Ren, a teenager from Chicago who moves to a small town where music and dancing are banned. Classic hits such as the title track 'Footloose,' 'Holding Out for a Hero,' and 'Let's Hear It for the Boy' will have audiences dancing in their seats.
Award-winning actress and singer Rachael Beck stars as Vi Moore, a preacher's wife and mother to rebellious teen Ariel Moore. Beck, known for her role in the television series 'Hey Dad...!' and for playing Belle opposite Hugh Jackman in 'Beauty and the Beast,' said she was excited to bring her flair to the role. 'It reminds me of my dancing days,' she said.
Beck encouraged audiences to get up and dance, especially during the final mega dance mix. 'It's the magic of live theatre, you can't beat it,' she said. 'The energy is pelted out into the audience.'
Acting executive manager of Civic Theatre Jo Michel noted that Newcastle audiences have a strong interest in musical theatre and national touring shows. She said roughly 10,000 tickets had been sold so far, with the opening weekend close to selling out. 'It's a cult show, it's a movie that we all loved and the music is universal,' she said.
