Robert Irwin has put to bed widespread rumours about his mother, Terri Irwin, potentially joining the cast of US Dancing With the Stars. The 22-year-old wildlife conservationist won the mirrorball trophy on the show last week, following in the footsteps of his sister Bindi Irwin, who won in 2015.
Speculation arose after Terri, 61, made a surprise appearance during Robert's emotionally charged performance honouring her late husband, Steve Irwin. The routine, set to Phil Collins' song You'll Be In My Heart, saw Robert's dance partner Witney Carson step off stage, allowing Terri to finish the dance with her son.
Despite the audience's positive reaction, Robert told The Hollywood Reporter that his mother is unlikely to compete. "Listen, the petition to have my mum on Dancing With the Stars has begun, and I started it. I started this season, and she is firmly like, 'Nope, I'm not doing it. That's not for me!" he said. "And I'm like, 'Well, I'm gonna wear you down,' so let's wear her down and get her on there, because I think she would be great."
During rehearsals, Robert broke down in tears while discussing the meaning behind his dedication dance. "I was two when I lost dad, and as I got older, I started to realise how hard it must be for her," he said. "I've never been able to capture the feeling of gratitude that I feel for her. At every milestone, I just wished that my dad was there. She was there, and that was enough."
The moving performance earned Robert unanimous praise from the judges, scoring 35 out of 40. After the dance, he appeared overcome with emotion as he hugged his mother.
