Port Kembla Mermaids Celebrate 60 Years of Friendship and Swimming

The Port Kembla Mermaids ladies' swimming club recently gathered at the Builders Club to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The group, known for their love of swimming in all seasons, has maintained a strong bond since their formation as young mothers bringing toddlers to swimming lessons.

Founder Dawn Robinson, now 91, was one of the original nine women who met at Jack Dunn's backyard heated pool in Port Kembla. The pool was originally built for Dunn's son, but later opened to the community, including mothers whose children had asthma. Current president Bev Ratcliffe, a member for 55 years, recalled how one woman suggested the mothers swim too, leading to the club's creation.

The group moved to Port Kembla Pool after Dunn sold his house, braving colder waters. Over the decades, the mermaids have supported each other through life's highs and lows, including the loss of husbands and partners. Ratcliffe noted that the club's focus on personal improvement rather than competition has fostered a caring environment.

Many members have been swimming for over 40 years, with some in their 80s and 90s still participating. The club has seen around 600 members come and go, but the core group remains dedicated to their Thursday morning swims, moving to Dapto heated pool in cooler months.

Ratcliffe emphasized the importance of the club's support network, saying, "Having someone to talk to, people who know what you're going through. Sometimes it's just a listening ear or a pat on the shoulder." The mermaids continue to prioritize their weekly swims, with Ratcliffe noting that her friends know she is unavailable until 2pm on Thursdays.
