A 17-year-old girl is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after being struck by a car during a car cruise event in Burswood, Perth, on Monday night. Caitlyn Dickson was hit by a black Honda Civic while crossing Camfield Drive near the Crown Casino precinct just before 10pm.
A 25-year-old man from Ascot has been charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm in circumstances of aggravation. He is due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Wednesday July 16. Police allege excessive speed was involved.
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said the girl suffered very critical internal injuries and broken bones. The driver was not injured and is assisting police.
The incident has sparked condemnation from Perth's car enthusiast community, with event organisers and attendees denouncing hoon behaviour. Ayden Gowland, a witness, described the crash as horrific and said it gave the community a bad reputation. Monday Meets Perth, the group organising the cruise, expressed shock and said they were processing how to proceed.
In a statement on Tuesday night, Ms Dickson's family said she was in intensive care receiving the best possible care. The community has called for responsible behaviour at car meets to prevent further tragedies.
