A mother and her 14-year-old son were injured in an alleged hit-and-run at a shopping centre in Gawler, north of Adelaide, on Tuesday. Police say a driver in a black Volkswagen struck multiple cars in the carpark before hitting the pair and fleeing the scene.
The teenager remains in hospital following the incident, which occurred just after midday. Witnesses described the driver's actions as cowardly, stating that the first instinct should have been to stop and ensure the victims were safe.
Police later arrested a 41-year-old man from Lewiston in connection with the crash. He has been charged with dangerous driving and leaving the scene of a crash. The man did not apply for bail and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
