Sacked Collingwood player Mason Cox is hoping for an AFL lifeline and believes he still has more to offer. The 34-year-old American, who spent 10 years at the Magpies, has headed home to help out at the USAFL national carnival but is keeping his phone handy in case another club comes calling.
Cox compared his delisting to a breakup, telling Triple M Melbourne's Mick in the Morning show: 'I think I attribute it somewhat to having a girlfriend break up with me. At the beginning, you know, you're shocked, and then you go into anger and upset, and then you just become appreciative of the experience.'
Host Mick Molloy, a Richmond fan, joked about Cox's role in the 2018 preliminary final, where the big American helped knock the Tigers out. 'On behalf of Richmond supporters everywhere, good riddance,' Molloy said. Cox responded with a humorous apology to Richmond fans.
When asked about playing for another club, Cox said: 'Definitely. I think I definitely have more in me... I'd love to come and play for another club and be valued.' Molloy hinted that a Western Australian club could be interested, advising Cox to stay close to his phone.
In an emotional Instagram video announcing his delisting, Cox thanked Collingwood fans for their support over the years, calling them 'the best supporters in the world.' He described the experience of having 100,000 people chant 'USA' at the MCG as something he'll never take for granted.
