Cold Storage Review: 80s Zomcom Delivers Ultimate Time Travel

Cold Storage, a new American film starring Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell, offers a cheeky and occasionally violent vibe reminiscent of 80s horror-comedies. The story follows two newly employed night security guards at a storage facility who discover that the building was constructed over a long-buried American military facility harboring a deadly secret.

As Teacake (Keery) and Naomi (Campbell) get to know each other during their first overnight shift, they investigate an annoying alarm behind a wall, which leads them to an old vault in the sub-basement. The alarm also alerts Defence staffer Abigail (Ellora Torchia) and retired facility protector Robert Quinn (Liam Neeson), who must save the world with the help of the untrained guards.

Writer David Koepp, known for his work on franchise films like Mission: Impossible and Jurassic Park, has crafted a screenplay that jumps between genres, including gross-out vegetable zombie horror reminiscent of George A. Romero's Creepshow. The film's casting offers refreshing takes on expected characters, with Neeson in his familiar problem-solver role paired with Lesley Manville as his former Defence assistant.

Director Jonny Campbell, who previously directed Doctor Who episodes, leans into the cartoonish quality of the gore and effects. The chemistry between Keery and Campbell adds to the film's charm, while Torchia's Defence staffer provides authentic comic relief as she attempts to do the right thing amid bumbling authorities.
