Chappell Roan has defended her revealing outfit at the Grammys, calling it “awesome and weird” after sparking widespread online debate. The 27-year-old singer wore a sheer burgundy Mugler dress attached to her nipple piercings, exposing her breasts on the red carpet.
In an Instagram post, Roan responded to the backlash, writing: “Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit. The look’s actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will it’s really fun and silly.” She also thanked the Grammys and voters for her nominations.
The outfit drew criticism from figures like Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo, who called it an “unfortunate fashion choice.” Social media users also weighed in, with some calling it “classless” while others praised the look, with one fan writing: “Some people have never seen boobs in their life and it shows.”
Roan accessorized with playful body art, including a hand-drawn pony on her chest—a nod to her hit “Pink Pony Club”—and an oversized lace-style tattoo on her back. Her red hair was styled in soft curls, paired with a crystal choker and earrings.
Later, when presenting an award, she changed into a cut-out gown offering more coverage. Roan was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her song “The Subway” but lost to Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther” and Lola Young’s “Messy,” respectively.
