On 25 April 2006, the Beaconsfield gold mine in Tasmania collapsed with 17 miners underground. Fourteen made it out quickly, but one man, Larry Knight, died. Two others, Brant Webb and Todd Russell, were trapped nearly a kilometre down.
They were found alive six days later by Pat Ball and Steve Saltmarsh, and brought to the surface on 9 May after a tense two-week rescue. When they emerged, they raised their fists to a cheering crowd and switched their tags to “safe.” Church bells, silent since World War Two, rang out, and a fire engine tore through town with its siren blaring.
On the eve of the 20th anniversary, Eddie McGuire joins Bob and Richelle to reflect on the event. McGuire famously arrived in Beaconsfield on the day of the rescue and shouted the bar, adding to the local lore.
