Dolph Lundgren, the Swedish actor known for his imposing physique and action movie roles, has opened up about his experience playing He-Man in the 1987 cult classic Masters of the Universe. In a recent interview, Lundgren reflected on the challenges and lasting impact of bringing the iconic character to life on the big screen.
A Role That Defined an Era
Lundgren, who was relatively unknown at the time, was cast as the muscular hero from the planet Eternia. The film, based on the popular toy line and animated series, followed He-Man as he battled the evil Skeletor, played by Frank Langella. Lundgren admitted that the role was physically demanding, requiring extensive training and a strict diet to maintain the superhero physique.
"It was a lot of pressure," Lundgren said. "I had to live up to the expectations of fans who grew up with the cartoon and the toys. But I also wanted to bring my own interpretation to the character."
Behind the Scenes Challenges
The film was not a box office success upon release, but it has since gained a dedicated following. Lundgren recalled the challenges of filming, including the heavy costume and the elaborate sets. "The costume weighed a ton, and the sword was real metal. It was tough, but it was also a lot of fun," he said.
Lundgren also praised his co-stars, particularly Langella, for their professionalism. "Frank was incredible as Skeletor. He brought a theatricality to the role that elevated the whole movie."
Legacy and Fan Appreciation
Despite mixed reviews, Masters of the Universe has become a beloved piece of 80s pop culture. Lundgren expressed gratitude for the continued fan appreciation. "I meet people all the time who tell me how much the movie meant to them as kids. It's humbling to know that I was part of their childhood."
The actor also addressed rumors of a potential return to the role in future projects. "Never say never," he said with a smile. "But if I do, I'll need to hit the gym again."
Lundgren's Career Beyond He-Man
Lundgren's career skyrocketed after Masters of the Universe, leading to iconic roles in films like Rocky IV and The Expendables series. He has also directed and written several films, showcasing his versatility in the industry.
Reflecting on his journey, Lundgren said, "He-Man was just the beginning. I've been fortunate to have a long career, but I'll always be grateful for that first big break."
