Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose husky voice powered 1980s classics like Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, has died at the age of 75. A message on her official Facebook page confirmed the news, stating: "Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for."
Final Months and Health Struggles
In May, Tyler underwent emergency intestinal surgery at a hospital near Faro, Portugal, where she resided. She was later placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery. Although she was eventually brought out of the coma, a representative described her as "very unwell and in intensive care." The singer had been battling the illness for some time before her passing.
Iconic Hits and Career Highlights
Born Gaynor Hopkins in the village of Skewen near Swansea, Tyler grew up in a council house with five older siblings. Her breakout came in 1977 with the dolorous It's a Heartache, which reached No. 4 in the UK and No. 3 in the US. However, her defining moment arrived in 1983 with Total Eclipse of the Heart, a power ballad written by Jim Steinman that topped charts in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Ireland. The song, originally seven minutes long, was shortened to a radio-friendly four minutes and became a karaoke staple. Tyler later said, "Some people think this song is about a vampire, but I've never understood that interpretation. I've always thought of Total Eclipse as an impassioned love song."
Her other major hit, Holding Out for a Hero, featured on the Footloose soundtrack and reached No. 2 in the UK in 1984. Tyler also earned three Grammy nominations, including one for her 1984 Giorgio Moroder collaboration Here She Comes. She remained a major force in Europe, with 1991 album Bitterblue topping charts in several countries. In 2003, a bilingual re-recording of Total Eclipse of the Heart with French star Kareen Antonn spent 10 weeks at No. 1 in France.
Eurovision and Later Career
Tyler represented the UK at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with Believe in Me, finishing 19th out of 26 countries. She said afterwards, "I'm sure a lot of people will be disappointed on my behalf but I have really enjoyed my Eurovision experience. I did the best that I could do with a great song." Her final studio album, The Best Is Yet to Come, was released in 2021. In 2025, she collaborated with David Guetta and Hypaton on a new version of Total Eclipse of the Heart.
Personal Life
Tyler married property developer Robert Sullivan in 1973; he represented Great Britain in judo at the 1972 Munich Olympics. The couple had no children, though Tyler suffered a miscarriage at age 39. She told the Guardian, "We just thought it wasn't meant to be. I have a large family anyway. I have five godchildren, 16 nieces and nephews, and 12 great nieces and nephews, so there is no shortage of children in my life."
