YouTube star Jesse Ridgway, better known online as McJuggerNuggets, has lashed out at critics after he and his wife decided to terminate their pregnancy upon learning their unborn baby would likely have Down syndrome. The 33-year-old made the disclosure across his social media channels on Thursday in a series of emotional Instagram Stories.
The Decision
“This week, my wife and I made the very difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy due to Trisomy 21,” he wrote. “The choice was not made lightly.” Trisomy 21, more commonly known as Down syndrome, is the most common genetic disability and affects about one in every 1100 births in Australia. The couple broke down in tears after learning their unborn baby had Down syndrome.
Backlash and Defense
The announcement triggered an immediate backlash online, with angry comments flooding Ridgway’s social media pages. He has more than 4.3 million followers across his platforms. In a new Instagram Story posted on Monday, Ridgway accused critics of ignoring the facts and creating their own narratives. “Y’all can’t even keep your stories straight, it’s crazy,” he wrote. “Was she six months pregnant or three months pregnant? 18 weeks or 21 weeks? Was it a definitive Down Syndrome diagnosis or just suspected? All the info has already been provided by us, but everyone just picks, chooses or makes shit up to fit their own narrative. As we creep further into the brainrot era of social media, people will forget how to even properly think for themselves.”
Ridgway also took aim at people questioning whether the situation was genuine. “The conspiracy rabbit holes deepen as people start to question if it was all real or fake...? Zooming in on ultrasound pics and my wife’s belly? Internet detectives putting in overtime only to discover their own tail. And we’re the ones with a problem…” he ended the story with an eye-rolling emoji.
Health Challenges
In his original announcement, Ridgway listed a range of health challenges faced by people with Down syndrome, including heart defects, hearing challenges, vision problems, impaired immune function, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, delayed physical development, poor muscle tone, structural issues with the face, and decreased lifespan. “Down Syndrome isn’t a ‘blessing’, it is objectively shitty from a health perspective,” he said. “I didn’t realise just how rough it is for the child, let alone the family… more often than not, they would be fully dependent on others for the rest of their life.”
Death Threats and Standing Firm
Ridgway also claimed the couple had received death threats. “I’ve never seen such hate and vitriol for two people grieving the loss of an unborn child and making an impossible decision,” he wrote in a follow-up post to Instagram stories. “The last 24 hours has exposed a side of humanity that is deeply disturbing. Being called a ‘murderous piece of shit, evil compared to Hitler’ and receiving NON STOP DEATH THREATS. What’s more troubling is a lot of these people use God or Jesus as their justification for threatening us and wanting to cast us to Hell… seems pretty hypocritical.”
Under Ridgway’s original post announcing the termination, one commenter wrote, “Imagine the message you are sending right now to every person with Down Syndrome around the world. You are telling them that their lives are not worth living.” Others took to a video announcing the pregnancy, which was posted on March 30, to critique the couple’s decision. Despite the backlash, Ridgway has made it clear he is standing by the choice he and his wife made.
