Fans have labelled Hugh Jackman's shoey stunt with Ryan Reynolds "un-Australian" after spotting a key detail in the viral video. The Australian actor recently roped in his Canadian best mate to do a shoey to celebrate a successful race by the BONDS Flying Roos team in the SailGP competition, which Jackman and Reynolds co-own.
Jackman captioned the clip shared on Instagram: "I would say it's been a good 35 years since my last shoey!!!" The video shows the duo taking turns chugging from a ceramic green Converse sneaker. However, many Aussies online were left unimpressed by the use of a ceramic prop instead of a real shoe. Comments on X included: "Not a real shoe," "A custom pair to do a shoey?" and "That's not real!" One user concluded the act was "un-Australian."
Despite the backlash, some fans praised the reunion of the Deadpool & Wolverine co-stars. One fan wrote: "Way to throw down that shoey … Even after 35 years you still got it!" Another added: "This might just be the hottest video you've ever posted." Reynolds chugged the fake shoe like a pro, impressing viewers.
Jackman and Reynolds' friendship began when they co-starred in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine and reunited for the 2024 blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. Their bromance is famously punctuated by a hilarious, decade-long "feud" where they roast each other publicly. They have also supported each other through tough times; Jackman recently revealed he lived with Reynolds for three months in 2023 after his split from wife Deborra-lee Furness. During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Jackman said: "I stayed at his place … like three months. He was my buddy. He's got my back." He added: "Every time I'm with him, I'm laughing till I cry at some point. He makes me laugh for an hour … an hour and a half. I could do that forever."
