The Box, a museum and art gallery in Plymouth, has been awarded the 2026 Art Fund Museum of the Year prize, receiving £120,000. The announcement was made on June 25, 2026, recognizing the institution's outstanding contributions to community engagement and its diverse programming.
Innovative Exhibitions and Community Focus
The Box stood out among five finalists for its innovative approach to exhibitions and its strong ties with the local community. The museum's recent shows have included a major exhibition on the history of Plymouth, as well as contemporary art installations that address social issues. According to the Art Fund, the museum has "redefined what a regional museum can achieve."
Winning Against Strong Competition
The other finalists for the award were the Museum of the Home in London, the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, the Turner Contemporary in Margate, and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Each received £15,000 as runners-up. The prize, one of the largest museum awards in the UK, is intended to support the winner's future projects.
Recognition for Regional Museums
Jenny Waldman, director of the Art Fund, said: "The Box is a shining example of how a museum can be at the heart of its community, telling stories that resonate locally and globally. This award is a testament to the hard work and vision of its team." The museum's director, Sarah Chapman, expressed her delight, stating: "This recognition is for everyone who has been part of The Box's journey. We are committed to continuing our work in making culture accessible to all."
Impact on Plymouth's Cultural Landscape
The award is expected to boost tourism and cultural engagement in Plymouth, a city that has invested heavily in its arts infrastructure. The Box, which opened in 2020, has already attracted over 1.5 million visitors. The £120,000 prize will be used to expand educational programs and develop new exhibitions.
