Jane Yolen, the prolific and celebrated author of more than 400 books for children and adults, has died at the age of 87. Her death was confirmed by her family, who said she passed away peacefully at her home in Massachusetts on June 24, 2026.

A Life of Storytelling

Yolen was best known for her 1987 picture book Owl Moon, illustrated by John Schoenherr, which won the Caldecott Medal. The book, inspired by a winter night walk with her husband, tells the story of a father and daughter searching for owls. It has sold millions of copies worldwide and been translated into dozens of languages.

Over her six-decade career, Yolen wrote in nearly every genre, including fantasy, science fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. She was particularly revered for her young adult fantasy series, such as the Pit Dragon Chronicles and The Devil's Arithmetic, which explored themes of identity, history, and courage.

Prolific Output and Influence

Yolen's bibliography includes 400 books, 300 short stories, and numerous poems. She won numerous awards, including the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Nebula Award, and the Skylark Award. Her work often drew on folklore, mythology, and Jewish heritage.

"Jane was a force of nature in children's literature," said author and friend Neil Gaiman. "Her imagination knew no bounds, and her generosity to other writers was legendary. She will be deeply missed."

Legacy and Tributes

Yolen's impact extended beyond her own writing. She mentored countless authors and taught creative writing at several universities. In 2019, she received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for her lifetime contribution to young adult literature.

Her family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, where Yolen was a longtime member. A public memorial is planned for later this year.
