The V&A Storehouse in east London has been named the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2026, winning the £120,000 prize. The museum, which opened in 2023, is a purpose-built storage facility that displays over 250,000 objects from the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection, offering public access to items not normally on view.
Innovative Concept and Public Response
Judges praised the museum's innovative approach to museum storage and display, describing it as a "game-changer" for how institutions can share their collections. The museum attracted over 500,000 visitors in its first year, far exceeding expectations. Director of the V&A, Tristram Hunt, said: "This award recognizes our commitment to making art and design accessible to all, and to reimagining what a museum can be."
Competition and Judging Criteria
The V&A Storehouse beat four other finalists: the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, the Museum of Making in Derby, the South London Gallery, and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The judges noted that all finalists demonstrated exceptional community engagement and innovative programming. Art Fund director Jenny Waldman commented: "Each of these museums shows how cultural institutions can inspire and connect people in profound ways."
Impact on Museum Sector
The award highlights a growing trend of museums using open storage to demystify their collections. The V&A Storehouse model is being studied by institutions worldwide. The £120,000 prize will support further community outreach and digital initiatives. The museum plans to expand its public programs and develop new ways for online visitors to explore the collection.
