An 11-month-old pig named Bacon is on the verge of achieving therapy animal fame, as he prepares to spread joy at charity events in Canberra and beyond. The adorable pig, who weighs around 80 kilograms, has been training for months to become a certified therapy animal. His owner, Sarah Jones, says Bacon has a calm and friendly temperament, making him ideal for interacting with people in hospitals, aged care facilities, and schools.
From Farm to Fame
Bacon was rescued from a farm where he was destined for slaughter. Jones, who runs a small animal sanctuary, took him in and quickly noticed his gentle nature. “He’s incredibly smart and loves meeting new people,” she said. “He’s already been to a few local events, and the response has been overwhelming.”
Therapy Animal Certification
To become a certified therapy animal, Bacon must pass a series of tests that assess his behavior in various environments. He has already passed basic obedience and socialization tests, and his final assessment is scheduled for next month. If he passes, he will join a select group of therapy animals in the region.
Jones hopes Bacon will inspire others to consider the benefits of animal therapy. “Animals can have a profound impact on mental health and well-being,” she said. “Bacon has a special way of making people smile, and I’m excited to see him make a difference.”
The charity events Bacon will attend include fundraisers for local hospitals and mental health organizations. His presence is expected to attract attention and boost donations. “Everyone loves a pig in a cape,” Jones joked, referring to the custom-made superhero cape Bacon will wear during appearances.
Bacon’s story has already captured the hearts of many on social media, with his Instagram account gaining thousands of followers. Jones says she is overwhelmed by the support and is committed to using Bacon’s fame for good. “We want to show that every animal, no matter their background, can have a purpose,” she said.
